Arnie’s home town plans 80ft Terminator statue

A plan to build an 80ft statue of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator guise in his home town has been revived despite the actor regarding it as a waste of money.

Councillors in Graz, Austria, first proposed putting up the statue in a park last year but shelved the plan after Schwarzenegger asked for the £3.5 million earmarked for it to be donated to a children’s charity instead.

Opponents also felt that the steel statue of the futuristic cyborg killer would be out of keeping with the medieval centre, dwarfing existing statues of Mozart and Emperor Franz Joseph.

Now that the Hollywood star is governor of California, however, the giant Terminator – as depicted by Mr Schwarzenegger in the second film in the series – has been embraced as a definite tourist attraction.

“Schwarzenegger is, after all, our biggest cultural export,” said Herwig Hoeller of the Stadtpark Forum, consultants hired to improve the image of Graz, the second biggest city in Austria.

Mr Hoeller, the author of an 80-page study entitled Project for a Terminator Monument, believes that the statue will revitalise tourism. “It’s time we had something new,” he said. “After looking at all the arguments, the conclusion was that it would be a major advantage for Graz to show its links with Schwarzenegger.”

Although Graz already boasts a football stadium named after Schwarzenegger, Mr Hoeller argues that it was named in honour of his sporting achievements – the actor is a former Mr Universe. “The city must also salute his film career,” he said.

Despite the likely appeal of a Terminator statue, detractors have argued that it would destroy the charm of Graz. Its narrow cobbled streets and medieval houses make it one of Europe’s best-preserved old city centres. The town was awarded World Cultural Heritage status by Unesco in 1999.

One prominent objector, Walter Maier, a businessman, conceded that the statue would attract visitors but said that it would lead to the “cheap Disneyfication of a beautiful Austrian town”.

If the proposal wins approval by the Graz authorities, Mr Hoeller said the statue should be built by next summer.

Fugitive’s Need For Strippers Leads To Arrest

PHILADELPHIA — With a little spare change, Guillermo Martinez could have kept running from the law.

The Philadelphia man is accused of tapping into his company’s bank account and using some of the money to take a pair strippers to Miami. But Martinez ran out of luck and quarters at a toll plaza near Annapolis, Md.

Martinez put his real name on a form that would have allowed him to pay later by mail. A clerk ran a check and found Martinez on a wanted list.

He was arrested the day before Thanksgiving and has been brought back to Pennsylvania. Authorities allege he used a debit card to steal about $150,000 from the nursing home company where he worked.
[modF]Of course he was from Philly, that just figures doesn’t it…. How stupid could you be to embezzle cash from your company than give your real name to the popo. [/modF]

Woman Knocked Unconscious By Wal-Mart Shoppers

ORANGE CITY, Fla. — A 41-year-old woman was knocked unconscious and then trampled by a mob of shoppers who continued to step over her as she suffered a seizure during a Friday sale at Wal-Mart in Orange City, Fla., according to Local 6 News.

Authorities said that Patricia Van Lester arrived at Wal-Mart at 3 a.m. for an early sale on a DVD player for her mother. When the store’s doors opened at 6 a.m., Van Lester grabbed the DVD player but was quickly overcome by hundreds of shoppers rushing into the store.

The woman was knocked to the ground, slammed her head on the ground and suffered at least one seizure, according to Local 6 News.

Her sister watched the incident and tried to stop the crowd as they made their way to the merchandise.

“I screamed, ‘Stop, don’t step on her, my sister is on the ground,’ and nobody would listen,” the woman’s sister, Linda Ellzey said. “I’ve never seen so many people in a store at one time — in one area. If there was a fire, nobody could’ve gotten out of there.”

When Orange City and EVAC paramedics got to the store they found Van Lester lying on her left side on top of the DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to the unconscious woman, said Mark O’Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.

Van Lester was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Ellzey said her sister will likely remain hospitalized for days.

Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her.

Wal-Mart Stores spokeswoman Karen Burk said she had never heard of a such a melee during a sale.

“We are very disappointed this happened,” Burk said. “We want her to come back as a shopper.”
